ESWL "Vs" SURGERY, (Why Lithotripsy
is Better than Operation)
The very word 'Surgery' or 'Operation'
is so horrifying & dreadful to cause palpitation, wet palms
and pilo erection. When Allah has provided us the advanced, non-surgical
superior remedy, Lithotripsy, which is also harmless, time tested,
cost effective, convenient & in use world wide with utmost success,
then there seems little justification to opt for the primitive,
dangerous, brutal and discarded path of surgery for stone management.
Human being is so delicately and softly formulated by Almighty Allah
that it feels intense pain of even a pinprick. Then who would like
the dissection of his abdomen with a sharp knife, permanent week
abdominal muscles, ugly scars, excessive blood loss with resultant
after effects and collateral damages, loss of working period for
weeks & months, admission in hospital, exposure to so many contagious
hospital infections along with chest & throat infections caused
by anesthesia intubation, in addition to inconvenience and mental
torture of attendants & relatives? Of course, no sensible person
would prefer this.
To add to this miserable picture,
in surgery, stone is usually removed by cutting the hollow tube
of kidney (renal pelvis or Ureter) and is repaired by stitching
with a thread. This process can implant infection in the kidney
& can make the lumen of the tube narrow and irregular (stricture),
resulting in stone reformation more frequently. Unfortunately, if
some serious infection flares up or some other complication of surgery
arises, then uncontrollable expenses are multiplied through various
channels like costly medicines, hospital & theater expenses,
bed & room charges, laboratory charges, doctors & nurses
charges and so on. The poor man may helplessly sees the control
of his budget slipping out of hands and realizes as if the python
of expenses is encircling his neck tightly and is dragging him to
some unknown destination. Some times, the life long savings of a
poor man or white collared gentle man are consumed completely and
it becomes impossible for him to continue with the lingering treatment.
The horrifying diseases of the
modern times, AIDS & Hepatitis may also get transmitted in surgical
patients through open wounds, injection needles & blood transfusions.
On the other hand, consider another patient, who has walked in a
Lithotripsy Centre, without even accompanied by any attendant. He
has taken his breakfast or meal of the hour in routine. He has discussed
his problem with the Lithotripsy Doctor. His case has been worked
up in a short time, has got the Lithotripsy treatment in 40-50 minutes
and after receiving certain instructions from the Doctor, has walked
out of Lithotripsy center, going back to his job on the same day
.This is a routine practice with Lithotripsy patients with few exceptions.
In Lithotripsy, there is no cut,
no wound, no hole, no scar, no instrumentation or manipulation endoscopically,
no significant bleeding or pain, no anesthesia & unconsciousness,
no indoor hospital admission or bed rest, no significant loss of
working time and none of the hazards & complications of Surgery,
anesthesia and hospital stay. There is also no chance of getting
Hepatitis or AIDS. The process may be repeated conveniently, if
required.
Because of these facts, in USA,
Europe and other advanced countries, the concept of open surgery
for stone removal has been eliminated practically and the treatment
of choice, in most of cases is through Lithotripsy (E.S.W.L.). Till
today, for suitable cases, no technology better than ESWL has been
invented even for the richest person on earth, head of a state or
any VVIP.
According to reports of some medical
journals, in USA, it is now felt unnecessary to train new doctors
for open surgery for stone removal, because stone removal by open
surgery in USA has become a primitive & almost obsolete method
to be mentioned only in history.
